The SATSA ‘This is Us’ conference recently took place in the Western Cape, and we are thrilled that one of our own members and Assessors, Dalfrenzo Laing, was invited to speak! Dalfrenzo participated in a panel that included Oscar-winning filmmaker Craig Foster (My Octopus Teacher), Colin Bell (owner of Lekkerwater Lodge), and Craig Marais (former SABC presenter and Naturalist).

Their presentation, titled ‘Mother Africa, Welcome Home,’ explored a range of nature and historically significant topics, from biodiversity preservation to the scientific archaeological research that traces our species, Homo sapiens, back to our origins in Africa.

The discussion emphasised the cultural heritage of Africa and the importance of preserving our cultures, keeping traditions alive, and sharing our remarkable stories with the world. Africa is in all of us—embedded in our genetics and DNA.

This deep connection is a key reason why so many are drawn to Africa and why they continue to return. The continuation of culture, heritage, and a connection to nature provides visitors with profoundly moving experiences that resonate on a personal level.

The presentation reminded everyone that we all originate from Africa, that our species is part of one big family. Tourism on the continent plays a vital role in bringing people together, reconnecting them with the place where it all began hundreds of thousands of years ago. Guides are central to this experience, serving as facilitators of these life-changing encounters. Through their expertise, they interpret and present Africa’s narrative, her wildlife, and her history with ethical and professional excellence.

Thank you, Dalfrenzo, for representing our continent, our country, and FGASA in such a powerful and meaningful way.
